The installation of the ETS FMIC is straight forward, once the bumper cover is removed, the plastic ducting in front of the radiator will be removed as well. The Intercooler will then be bolted to the crash beam via 4 self tapping screws. Then the piping will be plumbed into the stock piping that runs up and down the core support by the radiator. This will leave you with a full hard piped system. There will be trimming of the nose when it goes back on, most of the trimming will be in the lower grill area, and in the air ducts for the piping clearance. Also note that as the Intercooler is 10" tall, it will hang down 10" from the bottom of the crash beam. On some stock noses, this can cause the intercooler to hang below the bumper cover- Measure your car to see if you have 10" from the bottom of the crash beam to the bottom of the nose. Also note that due to the 4" thickness, this intercooler will not work with the JWT or Stillen Intakes. We recommend the ETS, Greddy, or HKS Intakes for this kit.

The amount of performance gain will depend primarily upon how much power you are making. On cars that make less than 400whp there will be an average increase of 15-20hp over the stock side mounts. On vehicles with over 400whp and on upgraded turbos, the performance increase will typically be about 8hp per 100hp of power. So at 600hp the expected power increase should be in the area of 48hp. This intercooler is rated for 820hp. One thing to note is that because of the lower outlet temps of the FMIC, the boost limit can usually be raised another 1-1.5 psi without any increase in the tendency to knock (detonation). By taking advantage of this, you can count on an additional 10-20hp over the boost level you were running previously. This means that cars on stock turbos can potentially gain up to 40hp, while cars with larger turbos may see increases of up to 80HP. Where the front mount really shines over the stock side mounts is in situations where the car is ran over and over without cool down. In these situations the stock units become heat-soaked and can no longer cool the charge air. When this happens they loose substantial efficiency and will quickly cause a lack of power and detonation. To help put this in perspective, on the stock side mounts the charge air on your first acceleration pull will be in the 130deg range, then on the second pull it will jump to 150deg, on the 3rd pull it will be in the 170's and it is here that it will level out. At these temperatures there will be a substantial loss of power and it will be very bad to run the engine into detonation. With the Front Mount Intercooler the charge air will be in the 105deg range on the first pull , then on the second pull it will be in the 115's , and it will stay in the 115-125deg range no matter how hard the car is driven. With these low charge air temps, the front mount will not lose power- no matter how hard you push it, the performance will be consistent and at 120deg the chance of detonation will be reduced dramatically.

With a potential power increase of 40hp on vehicle with stock turbos, the ETS front mount intercooler kit should be a serious consideration for any performance enthusiast running over 12psi on the 300zx. This IC will allow you to safely run much more boost than any side-mounts available, and performance will not drop off no matter how hard you run the car.
